Our Golf Club

The Musselburgh Old Course Golf club (MOCGC) is the only club to play out off The Old Course at Musselburgh Links. The Club was founded when local men believed it important the Old Course should regain some of its lost prestige. Without doubt the golf course went through a very serious decline during the twentieth century and photographs taken around 1980 clearly show the poor repair of the course to the extent bunkers had no sand in them and greens were barely distinguishable from the rest of the golf course.

The Club together with the local authority, who has responsibility for the links and golf course, made some improvements. However followiing an expansion of Musselburgh Racecourse the golf course lost the second hole putting green. Despite protests and promises the course did not receive any notable improvements until 1996. Many overdue adjustments were then made and the course condition is better now than it has been for many a year. Much work is still needed but is committed to its continued improvement.

To keep the course in the public eye, the Club has a full fixture list and hosts many competitions throughout the year. During the winter months we are still able to hold monthly medal competitions for all categories of golfers.

In addition, we host five open competitions including The Eskmills Hickory Open. This is a competition played with hickory shafted clubs.

June is a very important month for the Club as we hold our Club Championship and host The Musselburgh Challenge. The Musselburgh Challenge is a very special competition, founded by our ex Secretary Lionel Freedman, in which all the great clubs who once played at Musselburgh return and do battle in a nine-hole competition against each other. The 2007 competition saw the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews win for the first time. Incredibly, we believe this may actually be the first team trophy they have ever won!

MOCGC is a very real Club with very real members and their commitment to the Club and its cause give very real hope Musselburgh Old Course will again be a household name and a must visit location. With our Associate Membership this honour is now open to any friend of golf in the world.
